2013 ANOGUSA Image Awards Recipients

The ANOG Image & Service Award is an honor bestowed on distinguished Nigerians, resident in Georgia, who have projected positive "Image" of Nigerians in their professional and community activities, who have made notable contributions for the advancement their communities, locally and abroad, and who, by their conduct and reputation, have provided a shining example to succeeding generations of Nigerians, home and abroad.

Mrs. Ejem Ahanotu, Dr. Eugenia Busola George and Dr. Francis Onukwuli have been chosen as the ANOG 2013 Image Award recipients. The three have contributed immensely in their different ways in promoting Nigeria's image both at their professional duties and the community.

Profiles of award Recipients

Dr. Ejem Ahanotu attended the University of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada where he completed his undergraduate work in Microbiology, 1979. He moved to United States for graduate course in Biology at Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minnesota, 1980. He obtained a Master degree in Biology. He attended University of North Texas, Fort Worth, Texas for Ph.D. in Microbiology. 1985. In his research, Dr. Ahanotu developed antibod-ies against antigens of Legionella pnemophilia bacteria. He went to University of Louisville Medical School, Louisville, Kentucky as a Post-doctorate fellow to continue his research on Legionella pneumophilia bacterial infection.1985-1986 . Dr. Ejem Ahanotu worked as a Research Associate at Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, here he continued research on both enzyme biochemistry and antibody-antigen pharma-cology research for 4 years. He wrote many publications in this area. 

He worked for 4 years for the City of Fort Worth as a Senior Microbiology Water Analyst. 1990-1994.

 He is an ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) certified Clinical Microbiologist Technologist and had worked in that capacity for 1 year for the National Health Laboratory in Dallas, Tx.1994-1995.

 

 He joined the staff of the Biology Department of Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA. as a Visiting Research Fellow and worked in collaboration with Dr. Ahearn for 6 years during which time they wrote many publications in Bacterial Pathogenesis, 1996-2002.

 Dr. Ejem Ahanotu joined the staff of USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Athens, GA. as a Microbiologist for Food Microbial Testing 2002-2003; he also worked part time as a food microbiologist for Siliker Food Testing Laboratory in Stone Mountain, GA., 1996-2002.

 He joined the CDC Division of Select Agents and Toxins, Bio-Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response Division, as a U.S. Microbiologist Laboratory Inspector through a contracted company known as SRA International. He worked 6 years during which time he travelled nation-wide inspecting medical and research laboratories for usage / storage and disposal of select agents, biological toxins etc.; his group also trained

laboratory staff on bio-safety / regulations, 2003-2009. Dr. Ejem Ahanotu continuously maintained adjunct  faculty teaching positions at various colleges and universities where he taught clinical microbiology and other biology courses; among them included Dallas Community College, Dallas, Tx. 1994-1995, Tarrant County Community College, Fort Worth, Tx.,1989-1995; Clayton State University, Morrow, GA.,1997-1998, Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA., 1996-2003; Georgia Perimeter College, Decatur, GA, 1995-2003; and Norcross Institute of Allied Health, Norcross, GA. 2005-Present. Dr. Ejem currently works for ETS (Educational Testing Services) where he is the Advanced Placement Biology Faculty Exam Reader and also Biology Faculty Curriculum Reviewer. Dr. Ejem Ahanotu has received many service awards: among them include Obazu National Council of America Award and Igbo Union of Atlanta Service Awards. He is the current President of Mbieri Community Association of Atlanta. He has served Igbo Union as the general secretary twice. He is the Igbo Community Hall Manager. Dr. Ejem Ahanotu is a member of the cleaning crew at Jubilee Christian Church International where he volunteers to sweep, mop and wax the church floor every Saturday making sure that the rooms are ready for the children during church services on Sundays. Dr. Ejem Ahanotu had a Ministry to help the Elderly and the sick in the village. 1997-2011, Dr. Ahanotu annually traveled to Mbieri during Christmas

season to supply the elderly men and women with reading glasses. Additionally, he would buy blood pressure kits, glucometers, high blood pressure medications and vitamins to distribute to them.

Dr. Eugenia Olubusola Caulcrick- George is an educator, mentor and community leader. She   is the third of five. Children of late Mr. Jonathan Mobolaji & Mrs. Ellen Olusola Caulcrick of Lagos State, Nigeria. She was born and bred in Lagos State, Nigeria. 

Education: She attended the following schools and Universities:  Lagos Anglican Girl’s School (primary school education), Lagos Anglican Girls’ Grammar School, Surulere, Lagos (secondary education), Federal School of Arts & Science, Mubi, Gongola State, Nigeria, The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria (Higher School Certificate), Wilberforce University, Wilberforce Ohio/Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio (B.A. Hons. Mass Communication (Radio/T.V.) and (M.A. Ed. English), Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia. With her love and passion to meet the needs of students with disabilities, she returned to school for a second Master’s degree in Special Education and an Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in Interrelated Studies of Exceptional

Children/Administration) at Atlanta University. She later earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership at University of Sarasota, Sarasota, Florida.

 

Employment/Leadership Roles:2007- Present Founder /CEO Higher Heights /BCG EDU Solutions (Educational Consulting Services);1987-Present   Educator DeKalb County Schools; Dept. Chairperson, Southwest DeKalb High School, Toney Elem; Georgia Ambassador –(Georgia /Spain School Partnership Program); Chaired various school committees; Teacher Forum Representative, Mentor;  Consulate General of Nigeria , Atlanta, Georgia –Administrative Assistant ( 1982-1987).

 Community Service/Affiliations: Dr, George is a founding member and two term president of the Nigerian Women Association of Georgia, a nonprofit, service organization whose mission is to empower women, children and youth; and foster the Nigerian culture. During her tenure, the revenue of the organization increased tremendously. Other areas of growth of the organization during her tenure include increased membership and media exposure of NWAG programs and services. Hundreds of participants were exposed to the Nigerian culture as NWAG participated at the Children’s Village of the National Black Arts Festival, Atlanta, Georgia (a first for a Nigerian organization). She is an active member of Eko Club Atlanta, a chapter of Eko Club International (an organization for progress of local community and Lagos State, Nigeria). She is a member of St. Philip A.M.E. Church, Decatur, Georgia and serves on the George Moore/Sarah Allen Usher Board. She is member of National Association of Educators, Georgia Association of Educators, and DeKalb Association of Educators; Council for Exceptional Children, Advisory Board of Olusoye Compensatory Center, Nigeria (a special needs school).

 She has conducted many workshops and presented professional papers at local and National Conferences.

Awards/Recognitions: Dr. George is a consummate professional in all that she does. She has   distinguished herself and earned the respect of her colleagues as she was voted Teacher of The Year (TOTY 94/95) Toney School, DeKalb County School System). Some of her other awards and recognitions include the following: Woman of Distinction Award, July 6, 2013, (St. Maria Goretti Alumni Association, USA) Trumpet Award –June, 2010

(Award for dedicated service by Nigerian Women Association of Georgia) and Consulate General of Nigeria Community Service Award for selfless service to the Nigerian Community (Atlanta, Georgia August 2009). 

Dr. George is married to Mr. Babajide O. George. They have three children: Henrietta Oluseyi, Henry Oluseye, Ellen Ifeoluwa, one grandson - Jeremiah, Oluwademilade, and daughter in-law Jessica Ifeoma George. Dr. George loves children and strongly believes that what is most important in life is the individual and collective positive impact we make on the lives of others and the legacy we leave to posterity. Her favorite quote is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.

Professor Igietseme was born in 1955 at Agenebode, Edo State, Nigeria. He attended Saint Peter’s College, Agenebode (WASC 1974), and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (B.Sc Biochemistry, 1980). After his National Youth Service (NYSC), he worked as a Medical Representative at R.T. Briscoe Pharmaceuticals from 1981 to 1983. He obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) at Georgetown University, Washington, DC USA in 1987. With subsequent training in immunity and pathogenesis of infectious and non-infectious diseases, including a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, FL USA (1987-1989), Dr. Igietseme’s academic appointments started in 1989 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), Little Rock, AR USA, and was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor in 1993. He attained the ranks of Associate Professor (1998) and Full Professor of Immunology, Biochemistry and Microbiology (2002) at Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA USA! He was appointed as the Chief of the Molecular Pathogenesis Laboratory at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], Atlanta GA USA in 2002. Dr. Igietseme has maintained secondary appointments at the level of professor at Morehouse School of Medicine and Emory Medical School, Atlanta GA USA.

 

Dr. Onukwuli has received many honors and awards. He was named “Professor & Man of the Year” at Atlanta Metropolitan College in 2002; Coca Cola Teacher of the Year 2004-05; Teacher of the Year, Lovejoy High School (LHS), 2004-05; Recipient Teacher of the Year Award from LHS Parent-Teacher-Student Association, 2005-06. STAR Teacher of the Year, LHS 2008-2009; County STAR Teacher of the Year, Clayton County Public Schools 2009-2010; STAR Teacher of the Year, LHS 2010-2011; Claes Nobel National Educator of Distinction, National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. 

Dr. Onukwuli has made numerous contributions/services to both American & Nigerian Community in Diaspora. His accomplishments and contributions are worthy examples for progressive generations of Nigerians at home and in Diaspora to emulate. Dr. Onukwuli served as a Member of National Science Foundation Proposal Review Panel

(Co-chair Proposal Review Panelist 1989-90); Mathematical Association of America; Association of Computing Machinery; American Mathematical Society; International Development Education Council (Secretary, 1987-1990); Igbo Union Atlanta, USA (One of 3 Founding Fathers; 1st General Secretary 1984 – 1986 and IUA President, 1986-91); Umuoji Improvement Union (UIU National Vice-President USA & Canada, 2000-2004, President Atlanta Chapter (2002 - 2007); Anambra State Association, USA (National Education Committee Chairman 2004-2006); Knights of Columbus (Advocate, Jonesboro Council, 2004 - 2008); Notre Dame High School Alumni Association, USA (General Secretary 2006-2012); The Institute for Anambra/African Development (Board Member 2004 – Present); Nigerian Policy Institute, USA (Board Member 2006-2011); and Idemili United of Atlanta (Founding President 2008-Present).

In the Nigerian community, especially Idemili, where he is popularly called “Ichie Ochubalu Enyi” and well known for his commitment to humanitarian causes, Dr. Onukwuli has sponsored eight students at various Nigerian Universities. He is an “MC Extraordinaire” and the only Nigerian that has served as Master of Ceremony for over 300 Nigeria Diaspora functions without charging a dime. In recognition of his meritorious service to our community, for being a trailblazer in the academic arena, for projecting a positive image of Nigeria at home and in Diaspora, and for being a role model to all of us, it is our pleasure to present to Dr. Francis Ositadinma Onuk
